Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. The municipality covers 604.3 km2 (233.3 sq mi) and has almost 3.4 million inhabitants. As the political, economic and cultural centre of Spain, its metropolitan area is the second-largest in the European Union, home to more than 6.7 million people across the capital and surrounding region.
